Your anchor is the only piece of equipment that can hold your boat off the rocks with the engine dead, keep you on the fish in a ripping current, and let everyone sleep at a quiet cove. It's also the most commonly undersized, badly rigged, and poorly deployed gear on recreational boats. Here's how to get ground tackle right.
Ground Tackle Is a System, Not an Anchor
"Ground tackle" means the whole chain of components between your boat and the bottom: the anchor, the chain, the rope rode, the shackles and swivel connecting them, and the cleat or windlass taking the load. The system is only as strong as its weakest piece — and on most boats, the weak piece is an unseized shackle pin or a rode attached to the boat with a knot someone tied in 2019. Every component matters.
Anchor Types: Match the Hook to the Bottom
No anchor wins everywhere. The bottom you anchor over — sand, mud, grass, rock, shell — decides what holds.
- Fluke / Danforth-style — Outstanding holding-power-to-weight in sand and mud, stows flat in a locker, and is inexpensive. Weaknesses: grass, rock, and hard clay, where the flukes can't dig in, and it can struggle to reset if the wind or current swings the boat. The default primary anchor on most trailerable boats for good reason.
- Modern scoop / new-generation (Rocna, Mantus, Spade, and similar) — Concave fluke with a roll bar or weighted tip; sets fast, holds in the widest range of bottoms, and resets reliably when the boat swings. The best all-around choice if you anchor frequently or overnight. Costs more and wants a bow roller rather than a locker.
- Claw (Bruce-style) — Forgiving, sets easily, tolerates swings well; moderate holding power for its weight. A solid general-purpose pick, common on cruisers.
- Plow (CQR/Delta-style) — The traditional cruiser's anchor; reliable in varied bottoms, happiest living on a bow roller.
- Grapnel — For dinghies, kayaks, and snagging rocky bottoms; not a primary anchor for anything you'd sleep on.
- Mushroom — Permanent moorings only. The small ones sold as "boat anchors" hold almost nothing.
Sizing: use the manufacturer's sizing chart for your boat length and weight, and treat those numbers as minimums for fair weather. When you're between sizes — and especially if you anchor overnight or in current — go up a size. Nobody has ever dragged ashore wishing their anchor were smaller.
The Rode: Where Most Setups Fall Short
An anchor holds by being pulled horizontally along the bottom. Everything about the rode exists to make that happen.
- Chain first. A length of chain between the anchor and the rope keeps the pull flat against the bottom and shrugs off chafe from rock and shell that would saw through nylon. A practical guideline for recreational boats: a boat-length of chain, or at minimum 6–8 feet. Use galvanized chain matched to your shackle and anchor sizes.
- Three-strand nylon for the rope. Nylon stretches, and that stretch absorbs the shock loads of waves and gusts instead of jerking the anchor out or snapping hardware. Braided line is fine; three-strand stretches more and splices easily to chain. As a starting point, about 1/8" of line diameter per 9 feet of boat length.
- Seize your shackles. A shackle pin that backs out underwater is how anchors get donated to the bottom. Wrap the pin with stainless seizing wire or a heavy zip tie. Check it every season.
- Tie off the bitter end. The inboard end of the rode should be secured inside the anchor locker — with a length of light line you could cut in an emergency, not a shackle you can't reach under load.
- Carry enough. Total rode length should be at least 8–10 times the deepest water you realistically anchor in. For most coastal boaters, 150–250 feet of combined chain and line is the working range.
Scope: The Number That Decides Whether You Hold
Scope is the ratio of rode deployed to the vertical distance from your bow cleat to the bottom — depth plus your bow height, a detail people forget. The standard is 7:1: anchoring in 10 feet of water with a 3-foot bow height means 91 feet of rode, not 70 and definitely not "about 30, looks fine."
- 5:1 — acceptable for a calm-weather lunch stop with someone aboard keeping watch.
- 7:1 — the working standard for typical conditions and any time you'll stop paying attention.
- 10:1 — heavy weather, or when you genuinely need to stay put.
Most "my anchor won't hold" complaints are scope problems wearing an anchor costume. Short scope lifts the shank, the flukes lose their bite, and the best anchor made turns into an expensive bottom-plow.
Setting the Anchor (the Part People Rush)
- Pick your spot accounting for swing room — your boat will rotate around the anchor as wind and current shift, and so will your neighbors around theirs.
- Point the bow into the wind or current (whichever is stronger), stop the boat, and lower — never throw — the anchor until it touches bottom. Throwing piles chain on top of the anchor and fouls the set.
- Pay out rode as the boat drifts back or you idle gently in reverse, then cleat off at your target scope.
- Power-set it: with the rode cleated, idle in reverse and watch fixed points on shore (two objects in line work best). If they're not moving, you're dug in. If they're sliding, you're dragging — recover and try again. A set you haven't tested is a guess.
- Once set, note your position — a GPS anchor alarm on your plotter or phone is cheap insurance, especially overnight.
The Rule That's Actually About Survival: Never Anchor From the Stern
This one isn't etiquette — it's physics. The transom is the lowest, squarest end of the boat, often with engine cutouts and minimal freeboard. Anchored from the stern, the boat can't pivot its bow into waves and current; instead the flat transom takes them, and a following sea or strong river current can swamp and capsize a boat in seconds. The Coast Guard's accident reports include fatalities from exactly this, year after year, often on small boats in current. Anchor from the bow. Always. If you need to control the boat's orientation — beach camping, fishing a specific lie — use a bow anchor plus a second anchor or shore line, with the bow still taking the load.
Retrieval and the Stuck Anchor
Motor slowly toward the anchor while taking in rode, then break it out by pulling vertically once you're directly above it — let the boat's buoyancy do the work, not your back. If it's truly stuck, cleat the rode short and let wave action work it free, or drive slowly in a circle to change the pull angle. For rocky bottoms, rigging a trip line to the anchor's crown before you drop is the five-minute precaution that saves the $200 anchor. Know when to give up: no anchor is worth a dangerous situation. Cut the line and buy another.

How much scope do I need?
7:1 is the standard — seven feet of rode per foot of depth plus bow height. 5:1 for a watched lunch stop in calm water; 10:1 when the weather's up. Insufficient scope is the number-one cause of dragging.
Why should I never anchor from the stern?
The transom can't shed waves and current the way the bow can, and its low freeboard means a following sea or strong current can flood and capsize the boat fast. It's a recurring cause of capsizing deaths in Coast Guard accident data. Bow only.
Do I need chain on my rode?
Yes. Chain keeps the pull on the anchor horizontal — which is how anchors hold — and resists chafe that would cut nylon line. A boat-length of chain, or at minimum 6–8 feet, ahead of three-strand nylon is the standard recreational setup.
What's the best anchor type?
